Lichfield’s Great British Summer
There’s nowhere better to celebrate the Great British Summer of 2012 than our wonderful historic city of Lichfield. As we go to press, Lichfeldians will be partying in the street to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, and the Bower will hopefully have had another bumper year. But leave that bunting out; the summer has only just begun!
Keep 30th June Free
The busiest day of the Lichfield Summer is June 30th with an absolute whirlwind of activities set to take place.
As the nation warms up for the 2012 Olympics, we enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the Olympic Torch as it passes through Lichfield. There’s a range of events to mark this special occasion, including the annual Cathedral Dash brought forward to coincide with the torch’s arrival.
On the same day the Cars in the Park show at Beacon Park is a must. Then keep an eye out for the National Town Criers’ Competition around the town and don’t miss the circus skills displays and workshops at Minster Pool hosted by Lichfield Arts and the Lichfield Juggling Cub (a city’s not a city until it has a juggling club!)
City of Festivals
Summer 2012 sees the showpiece Lichfield Festival begin its second 30 years in the city. It’s a packed programme with highlights from some of the world’s best musicians – right here in Lichfield!
Other favourites are the Real Ale, Jazz and Blues Festival 7th-10th June at the Rugby Club, and the Fuse Festival, 6th -8th July in Beacon Park, which is the best, free, family fun to be had anywhere in the country. Throw in the Lichfield Folk Festival and, at nearby Catton Hall, the rather gruesomely named Bloodstock and it’s easy to see why Glastonbury won’t be missed this year, at least by the people of Lichfield.
And there’s more….
There are concerts at the cathedral, shows at the Garrick, Shakespeare in the Park and the usual host of village fayres, fetes and shows. We’ve given you a just a taster here, so stick around this year and enjoy the celebrations as Lichfield’s Great British Summer of 2012 plays out on your doorstep.
